People like to point out how moral stories don't fit with real life.

Every so often, Christians, you might hear someone tell you that stories with a moral often don't fit with real life, and that might make you feel like your own Christian morals might not be realistic either. A moral story about someone who lies is usually caught by the end of the story, but you even know yourself that people can tell a terrible lie about someone in everyday life and they don't seem to get caught. However, if you were to think longer about the situation, wouldn't you still conclude that it isn't right to tell a hurtful lie?

Whether a person is caught or not, should they tell a hurtful lie about someone? Also, can't lying in certain situations lead to serious trouble, even if you don't always see someone get caught? In other words, the action and consequence in a moral story might not always happen exactly the same way in real life, but good moral stories still teach a lesson.

They speak to how certain types of behavior cause problems and how those behaviors can cause problems for the instigators as well as the victims. A modern bias is to want to find flaws wherever morality or consequences are concerned. Sarcastic comments directed against your faith can be hard to forget.

In trying to hold on to your faith, Christians, be ready to deal with sarcasm. Because it can be sharp, it can penetrate deep into your thoughts, and that makes it harder to forget. Sarcasm can also seem to point out what is really true, which can also tamper with your thoughts on a deeper level.  However, knowing how to analyze sarcasm can keep it from misleading you.   

 

Consider a comment such as, “I think it's smart to become a Christian because it keeps you from worrying about what death really means.” Try to separate what might be true about this comment from what isn’t because the aspect of truth in it can cover up the untrue part. It is true that people can have a hard time thinking about death, but it probably isn’t true that you became a Christian just to escape reality.

 

On the other hand, just trying to ignore a comment that is troubling you without analyzing it may keep you from seeing what is untrue about it. This may cause you to worry if it is true. The worry caused by a misleading comment can gradually change how you think about your faith over time.

It makes you feel like it knows.

For those of you thinking about believing in God and becoming a Christian, what may be holding you back is a convincing voice in your head that says there probably really isn’t a God.  However, a key question to ask yourself about that voice is whether it has been proven wrong before.   Has it ever happened that this voice caused you to doubt what others predicted, and even though it made you feel almost certain it wouldn’t happen, it did? 

 

Believing in God isn’t about trying to convince oneself of what simply couldn’t be true either.  To the contrary, you may already see how there could really be a God and that Jesus could be him.  You might also view the teachings of Jesus about how to treat people as making sense in themselves.  It is that voice that says the idea of a God probably just isn’t true that may be stopping you from going any further.  However, don’t let that voice control your decision to become a Christian. 

 

You know that voice can be wrong.  It can sound certain without really knowing.  Don’t let it hold you back.

Christians, you can help promote Christianity’s presence online by writing in your social media bios that you are Christian.  For example, you might say that you are a Christian, mom, and teacher who loves to paint.  Mentioning that you are Christian shows other people that this side of your identity is central to who you are.

 

Saying that you are Christian in your online bios also encourages other Christians to express their identities as Christians online.  It boosts the morale of Christians to see various members of the public expressing their identities as Christians online as well.  It builds a sense of Christian community.

 

Offline, you can also let people know you are Christian in self-introductions of different kinds. For example, you might mention you are a Christian during an ice breaker at an onboarding session for new employees.  One new employee might ask how long you have been a Christian, and that exchange is also part of what helps grow Christianity’s presence in the public.

An informal Christian group can be created simply with a group chat, and it can be a good way to bring Christian friends together.

You don’t need to start a formal Christian organization or Bible study to bring Christians together.  Formal groups with regular meeting times and set group roles have benefits, but it is possible the Christians you know from different sides of your life might not all feel ready for that yet.  However, there are still ways to informally bring together Christians you know from places like your part-time job and university. 

 

You can ask Christian friends if you can include them in a group chat, for example.  This group chat might include Christian friends from the gym, work, school, and church.  You can use the group chat to share links to Christian apps or organize a time for pizza and Christian movie, for example. 

 

It can feel good to spend time with a group of people who share your interests as a Christian. A group of friends with similar interests can help support your morale as a Christian when it can feel like there is little support for the Christian life in the public.  It can be fun to hang out with one good friend with similar interests, but many people also want to spend time in a group that supports their values as well.
